Letting Go...
05 November 2009
As creative director at Xcel Church I'm learning to let go of total creative control. I'm passionate and opinionated about how we should do our creative 'thang' in church and that can often cause others in the team to shy away from inputting their ideas and styles into the mix. If the team is to grow then it will only happen as more people use their gift.
One of the first steps we've just taken is to move away from a centralised approach to planning setlists. Where before we had one setlist for our 3 AM services, we're now devolving responsibility to the team who are making that particular service happen. We still have guidelines and a playlist to select from to ensure consistency between services but now our worship leaders and music directors are calling the shots.
I'm hoping that as more people in our team are involved in crafting Sunday experiences we'll see our style become more reflective of our church (rather than what I think they dig) and the creative output of the team will increase as more of us get the juices flowing.
